6 Rules to Personal Productivity
Posted by Ben Sanderson on 1/15/2012 to Productivity

We often dream about starting a business, inventing a totally new product or becoming the person we always wanted to be. Almost every day we have a really good idea: suddenly we discover how a business process can be made much simpler, how a certain tool can be made better or why something simply doesn't work the way it should. However, these thoughts seldom reach the project stage, and even fewer are realized. Below you will find a few tips on how you can stop dreaming, and start realizing the things you want.

Don't hesitate

Most people love dreaming, and hate doing anything to make those dreams happen. Dreaming is essential as you prepare a new project, but you always have to know when you have to stop planning, and start acting. Actually the transition from planning to acting is one of the hardest challenges to overcome for a young entrepreneur. The good news is that as you start sharing and testing the concept, or you start building a prototype, you will get feedback. With the advice from others, you can start to refine your idea and slowly you will be able to move your attention to more practical aspects of your project.

Don't be afraid to start small

Let's be frank: we never dream small. We always dream big. Most of our ideas are really nothing more than hazy and overly optimistic concepts. The problem with this is that our expectations are also high, and because we fear of failure, we never start acting. To avoid the blue sky paralysis, always try to think about a smaller but executable concept. Do you want to build a solar-powered car? You might start with a smaller model, and see if your ideas work. Usually with a few small tests you get valuable insights on how many problems you need to solve to build the real thing.

Don't be afraid to fail

Trial and error is the best way you can learn, so don't be afraid: every time you fail, you actually get closer to accomplish the things you dream about. Okay, people will laugh at you, and sometimes you will feel miserable, but if you try to learn from every mistake you make, sooner or later you will succeed. The only secret to success is not to make the same mistake twice.

Stick to the original idea

As you work with a concept, you will have many complementary ideas along the way. If you are a photographer and you want to make a 5-day trip into a remote area to make pictures, you might be tempted to bring along a few friends, or you could consider volunteering in a school from that area. There is nothing wrong with these ideas, but if you don't stick to your original concept, you can be sure that it will have to suffer. So if you want to take pictures, go and take pictures. If you want to volunteer, go ahead, but then don't expect to have many good shots.

Work on your idea every day

No matter you plan to write a book, build an on-line business or run a marathon, it is very important to maintain momentum by working every day towards your goal. You don't have to work a lot: sometimes even an hour might be enough for success. You will need a lot of self-discipline to keep on going when your enthusiasm is gone, but if you manage to build a routine, you will soon discover that your brain will be more creative, and things will get easier. Stay on task and stay productive.

Break it into pieces

If you are working on a long-term project, you can keep your motivation by breaking the project into smaller pieces. This way you will always know what are the things you already accomplished and what is still ahead. The project will feel more manageable, and you will be able to taste success even when you still have a long way to go.
