As you spend more and
more time at the office, and the pressure tends to be higher than ever, it is
unavoidable to let yourself loose from time to time. While you are working
hard, you also want to have some fun, and there is nothing wrong with this.
Today, most companies
allow their workers to have small hobbies or unusual, but relaxing habits at
the workplace. Some companies even have fun committees: the output of these
committees might no be funny at all, but they show that the management at least
tries to create an energizing, creative environment.
The key to having fun
at the office is to manage your time wisely: the faster you finish a project,
the more time you have for breaks. Here you can read about a few inspiring
ideas on how to relax at the office in a fun and creative way.
Always make a daily
work plan, and try to have a few minutes of rest between every client, meeting
or project. If there is no way you can do this, at least try to find half an
hour to relax at the middle of the day. You will see that your overall
productivity will increase spectacularly.
Your daily work plan
should be set in a way that you have some spare time at the end of the day. You
can use this time to have some more fun, or eventually leave early. And if you
have some last minute thing to do, you can finish without having to do
overtime.
When you take a break,
always try to leave your desk. The main goal here is to get up from your chair,
and do something totally different. Invite a new colleague out to lunch, organize
a paper airplane contest, or do some stretching exercises.
There is nothing wrong
with sleeping during office hours. If you can find a quiet place, and the
management has nothing against it, you can take a quick nap. However, always
ask your co-workers to wake you up after 30 minutes: you don't want to spend
the rest of the day sleeping.
You can make the best
use of your relaxing time by learning something: a new language, or a new
skill. Imagine how good your Spanish could be after three years if you spent
half an hour each day learning. You can also start yoga, build model airplanes,
or take an interesting on-line course in psychology.
If you ever get
stressed out, always have something to entertain yourself. A mental puzzle
might be a good choice, but you can also take a few Lego bricks with you, and
build a space ship or a medieval castle.
You can try to involve
the whole office: you can wash together one colleague's car during the lunch
break, or you can organize a paper airplane contest: the builder of the longest
flying airplane could get 15 minutes of extra break. You can also organize a
coloring contest, or even a small lottery: the prize could be a dinner for two
at a fancy restaurant.
It is also a good idea
to start playing a party of chess each day with one of your colleagues. This
way you can know each other better, and you will have the opportunity to
exercise your brain daily. However, make sure that you don't spend too much
time planning your moves.
In addition to these
ideas, you can also create a more relaxed atmosphere by giving a small, but
personalized gift to your co-workers, complimenting everyone you meet at the
office, or bringing your favorite plant
for your desk.
